More and more folks want to own portable garden greenhouses now that their cost has come down. But space and budget are critical considerations if you plan to purchase a starter greenhouse, or even build your own. These two important factors can help you make the right decision regarding the type of greenhouse to be constructed or purchased. You’ll also need to consider heating and ventilation requirements, and ensure there is a handy supply of water. After you do this preliminary planning, you can then decide the type of greenhouse that will fit your needs.

After this, you have to decide if your greenhouse will be connected or stand-alone. You will be able to walk straight into an attached greenhouse, while a separate one will require you to go outside. Or you may opt for an indoor greenhouse if you have space constraints, or if it gets too cold in the winter in your region.

A classic barn style greenhouse is the most popular style of greenhouse. Prefabricated, movable greenhouses are fairly low-maintenance and not hard to set up, so most people really like them. However if you’re truly serious about getting into greenhouse gardening you should put some thought into making a permanent greenhouse structure. There are several alternatives available to the pricey glass greenhouses you see on TV and in advertising. A lot of pre-made greenhouses are made of aluminum framing with polycarbonate panels.

Experienced greenhouse gardeners will tell you to construct the largest greenhouse that your space and budget will allow. In the long run, it will be more expensive to add on to a smaller sized greenhouse, than to just purchase a larger one in the first place. Larger sized greenhouses can often turn people off, as they might not want to commit to growing that many plants. Yet the biggest problem many folks have is getting rid of plants when their greenhouse gets full.

Be sure to pick plants that best reflect your level of gardening skill. It’s necessary to be dedicated about tending to them, because you don’t want to have wasted all that energy in setting up your greenhouse. Also, you have to ask about permits and licensing requirements; this way you will be worry free and you can spend your time enjoying your gardening.
